02 / Project Overview

Palace of Twelve Nights, Built for Christmas Waiting

We kicked off this premium advent calendar project with a clear brief from the client: break the stereotype of disposable festive packaging. Traditional countdown boxes are designed for one-time use. Once the holiday ends, they are discarded immediately. The client wanted a luxury Christmas gift that doubles as a collectible art object, something owners would display on shelves year after year.

At the early conceptual stage, our team tested dozens of themes: winter forests, snow globes, fairy-tale castles. Yet these ideas stayed on a superficial decorative level. They looked beautiful, but lacked interaction and time-related storytelling. During a late-night brainstorm, a designer sketched the outline of a quiet town mansion under the night sky. The 12 window cutouts on the facade sparked our inspiration at once. What if each window represents one night of waiting before Christmas? That was the birth of the “Twelve-Night Palace”.

The design journey was full of trade-offs. Our first draft placed the 12 compartments randomly, but the architectural balance was ruined. We spent weeks adjusting the layout to mimic the rhythm of a real building’s facade. Colour selection also brought challenges. Initial navy samples appeared dull under indoor lighting. We tested over 15 kinds of special paper, finally landing on deep midnight blue, paired with fine gold foil stamping to draw architectural details and star radiating lines.

We also faced structural hurdles. We hoped the box could unfold like a real building, revealing inner space from the outer facade. Many prototype versions failed: weak paper structure, misaligned die-cut windows, emboss marks cracking on the foil. We worked closely with the factory to refine die-cut and embossing crafts, repeatedly modifying tolerances.

The final product is not just packaging. It is a miniature palace. Every time the recipient opens one window, they light up the mansion. The twelve openings record twelve consecutive nights, turning abstract anticipation for Christmas into a slow, tactile ritual.

The Conflict Between Ritual & Structure

03 / Challenge

How Do You Make Anticipation Physical?

Traditional advent boxes separate countdown and physical experience. Our challenge was to merge sequential ritual, architectural silhouette and production feasibility.

The 12 windows must guide users through 12 nights of slow unveiling, while die-cut openings cannot compromise the box’s rigidity and the midnight palace aesthetic.

The journey toward the palace gives waiting a direction, distance and rhythm

05 / Countdown Ritual

Twelve Nights, Twelve Lights

Christmas countdown is not about rushing to the end, but savouring the journey. One window per night, one light per opening. Twelve glimmers record gradually unfolding winter hopes

07 / Light Architecture

The Architecture of Light

Light is the soul of the palace. Light and shadow are embedded into architectural texture. Golden lines and staggered windows carry luminous moods; form shapes light, and light crafts serene atmosphere

Layered windows and radiating lines create a measured field of light

The graphic system lets light travel through structure rather than sit on the surface
